Private collection, Munich, by 1958, and by descent.On account of an engraving depicting Christ as the Man of Sorrows and the Virgin as Mater Dolorosa in a landscape bearing the monogram and date ‘1522 / L’ at upper left, an impression of which is in the British Museum (inv. no. Kk,6.102)
, this panel is one of a pair that likely formed a diptych and is based on a lost prototype by Lucas van Leyden (1494-1533), a Dutch painter and engraver whose work is marked by the Germanic pictorial tradition and Italian mannerism. Probably executed around 1600, this engraving testifies to the interest shown in the artist half a century after his death, as do the approximately thirty known painted versions of this composition, including a painting in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (inv. nos. SK-A-1483).
Another version of this composition and its mate depicting Christ as the Man of Sorrows sold Christie’s, Paris, 15 June 2023, lot 2 for EUR 441,000.
