The Crucifixion with the Madonna, Saint John the Evangelist and two angels
tempera on gold ground panel, triangular, in an integral frame
13 5/8 x 19 ¼ in. (34.6 x 49 cm.)
inscribed 'INRI' (upper centre)Acquired by the grandfather of the present owner, and by inheritance.This panel, to date unknown, shows close similarities to the work of Paolo Veneziano. In design it is close to the central panel in the upper register of the
Polyptch of Saint Lucy, given to Paolo Veneziano and his workshop, made
circa 1340 for the Abbey of St. Lucy in Jurandvor, Krk. Another representation of the
Crucifixion, in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, from a similar date, shows comparable features, including the parapet behind the cross. Whilst the figure of Christ is very finely executed and well preserved, those of the Madonna and Saint John appear to have been largely overpainted or reworked at a later date, similarly the angels upper right and left.
