Ludwig Passini (Austrian, 1832–1903), Venice Street Vendor, watercolor, signed lower left, dated 1880, marked "Venezia", period gilded gesso frame, original Dominion Gallery label from Montreal, Canada affixed verso, image:18.5"h x 11.81"w (47 x 30 cm), overall (with frame): 27.17"h x 20.47"w (69 x 52 cm)
Provenance: Originally acquired from the collection of Baron von Quh, a well-known Viennese collector. Sold with original paperwork from the Gallery including a Certificate of Authenticity signed by Max Stern, PhD. Also includes an original receipt from 1954 as well as an appraisal from 1984 for $1500.
Ludwig Passini was an Austrian native researcher and printmaker. He received medals in Paris (1870), Vienna (1873), Munich (1879), and Berlin (1896). His works were included in exhibitions at the Royal Academy and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colors in London, and he became an honorary member of the latter in 1883. Passini was awarded the Bavarian Maximilian Order for Science and Art in 1893. 1878 Passini was made a knight of the Legion of Honour and an honorary professor of the Vienna Academy of Art the following year. He was also a member of the Academy of Arts, Berlin, and the Academy of Arts, Venice.
