Liverpool printed creamware signal mug, circa 1793-1800, cylinder form with printed and hand
拍品描述:
Liverpool printed creamware signal mug, circa 1793-1800, cylinder form with printed and hand coloured decoration, inscribed 'An East View of Liverpool Lighthouse and Signals on Bidfton Hill (sic)', height 12cm Provenance: Earle D. Vandekar, Knightsbridge. NB: The signal house on Bidston Hill was first mentioned in 1763. A telegraph service was set up to give early notice of the arrival of ships in the port of Liverpool. As a result over 100 signalling poles were erected, mostly belonging to the merchants of Liverpool. In 1771 the first Bidston lighthouse was erected and the government established a chain of stations using semaphore signals between Bidston and Holyhead in order to forewarn of the approach of any enemy. The flag no. 40 on this particular mug is inscribed 'Enemies' and this raised atop the Bidston lighthouse. (Please note condition does not form part of the catalogue description. We strongly advise viewing to satsify yourself as to condition. If you are unable to view and a condition report is not already available, please ask for one and it will be provided in writing). Condition is good with just a spot of staining underneath the glaze on the handle. No further issues.
