In celebration of the 75th birthday of HM King Charles III, Balmoral released The King's Birthday Edition, a single cask distilled at Royal Lochnagar in 1978. The whisky was tasted by HM The King before 253 bottles were filled and numbered by hand on His Majesty's birthday, 14th November 2023.
The association between Balmoral, the Highland home of the Royal Family, and Royal Lochnagar Distillery dates back to a visit by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1848. Today, the distillery - a mile from Balmoral Castle - is proud to supply its Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky for Balmoral bottlings.
Aged 45 years and bottled at natural cask strength (52.1% abv), the palate is rich with Royal Lochnagar signature fruit notes, candied walnuts and toffee undertones, with a lingering oak spice finish.
Presented in a case made of windblown larch from Balmoral and zero-waste seaweed paper by Notpla (a winner of The Earthshot Prize), each bottle is also supporting the planting of 75 trees – one for each of The King's 75 years – to create a natural legacy of more than 18,000 trees on the Balmoral Estate. In addition to receiving bottle 078/253, the winning bidder is invited along with three guests to Royal Lochnagar Distillery for a tour and tasting of rare cask samples drawn in the warehouse, and a Balmoral safari taking in woodland, ancient Caledonian Pine Forest, and the flanks of Lochnagar.
All bidders on the lot and any persons who participate in the trip must be aged 18 years or older. The experience must be taken within 12 months of the auction close, and is subject to availability of a mutually agreeable date between all parties.
