Carvedflat on the base to form the present boulder with most of its original form preserved, the boulder is irregularly shaped and accentuated witha coiled structure covered with a textured and wrinkled surface.
A burl results from a tree growing under pressure and it is found on different types of trees. The burls on pine, cypress, and birch trees are most peculiar and commonly employed. Burlwood was particularly popular in the Ming and Qing dynasties, and examples of burlwood pieces include cups, ladles, and other vessels.
「癭木龍筋山子」，天然癭木，惟底截平即成山子，保留原始奇形，捲曲，瘢痕，瘤節等自然形態。癭木通體扭曲盤繞，褶皺遍布，異形怪狀莫名其妙。與蘇東坡（1037〜1101）〈沉香山子賦〉所云「亦鶴骨而龍筋」大抵相似。本器精選奇材，藉以歲月，故能堅實蒼勁，包漿瑩徹。
木癭，是樹木受壓迫橫生的瘤節，不拘樹的類別俱能有之。松樹，柏樹，樺木的癭瘤紋理花瘢最奇，也最常被取用。由於其形狀、瘢紋均天然生成。取之者，象其所肖而造形，往往出人意表的巧妙，故在明清極盛行。有癭杯、癭瓢、癭鼎等，種類甚夥且奇，要之適用。
