The well-patinated burlwood, with a bifurcated trunk, resembles a pierced scholar's rock. With minimal carving, the craftsman created a brushpot that retained the natural form and qualities of the burlwood, including the wrinkled skin, clusters of knots, as well as the variegated wood grain.
Compare a burlwood brushpot from the collection of Qian Qianyi (1582-1664) now preserved in the Palace Museum, Taipei (accession no. gu diao19N), showcasinga similar form, material, and craftsmanship as the current brushpot, and possibly carved by the same hand.
「癭木雙髻筆筒」，天然硬木癭，癭皮堅實，歲久包漿瑩徹，形如怪石孔穴漏透。由主幹分出雙髻，髻頂嵌空探穴，略施斧斤即成筆筒。全器癭皮皴皺，瘤點簇聚，其紋理或方，或圓，或密結，或鬆散，或直點下竄，或曲繞如雲水，極盡木紋之美。
台北故宮博物院有清宮舊藏錢謙益（1582〜1664）銘「癭木靈芝筆筒」[1] 與本器的造形、材質、工法及自然老化等現象參照，自是異曲同工之妙。藝匠無署名，或係出自一人之手。錢謙益同年遺民老友，雕刻妙天下的濮仲謙（1582〜？）。據載于清初順治五年（1648）曾為其夫人柳如是製作竹器。[2] 張岱（1597〜1689？）《陶庵夢憶》記載，吾友南京濮仲謙所製作品，尤喜樹根盤結，或是竹節支離，即略施斧斤，勾勒數刀，遂成奇器，所享價幾與金銀爭重，妙絕一時。[3]
