Japan, Monoyama period (1573–1615 ) to early Edo period
Of yosegi (jointed) construction, the figure is shown standing on an elaborate stepped pedestal carved with floral decoration in openwork, with swirling cloud and lotus motifs.
His hands are held in a mudra representing one of the nine levels of rebirth (kubon) the robe loosely draped across the torso and hanging at the sleeves, eyes and uma inlaid in crystal and colored stone.
The Kohai (aureole) behind him carved with an openwork design of interlocking flames.
