Cornelius Johnson
(
Cornelis Janssens van Ceulen) was born in London to Dutch or Flemish parents. Johnson's first known work was executed in 1617, from which he went on to have a successful career painting portraits of emerging English gentry. The sitter in the present example, Sir George Whitmore (died 1654) was Lord Mayor of London in 1631 and a member of the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers.
