daughter, represents technical and conceptual evolution in humanity’s relationship to AI.
The work is created using a prompting technique that predates most text-to-image generation, stemming from the artist's early GAN experiments in 2018 with
blue girl (qualia), the artist’s first creation with AI. The image was adapted to prompt in 2019, and that prompt has been systematically deconstructed and iteratively rebuilt for each new generation of AI technology to emerge. This process aims to preserve a sense of “qualia” in the work through adapting and expanding the language of the prompt for increasingly sophisticated models. Through prompts, the artist uses words to attempt evoking the wordless experience of qualia in a machine that does not experience qualia itself. As AI capability evolves, so does its demonstration of understanding this concept, creating a visual lineage that begins prior to mainstream adoption and evolves alongside AI to this day.
In the artist's words: "This work traces an evolutionary line from my first experiments with GANs to current AI. Each iteration of the prompt carries forward elements from previous versions while adapting to the possibilities offered by emerging technology. The prompt has always inspired “qualia” in me, and if by iteration, one day AI experiences qualia itself, we will know it is truly humanity’s child. I hope my technique tracks that journey toward sentience, and I hope my prompt will continue to persist and evolve even after I’m gone."
The multiple layers of transparency and interaction between forms create a visual dialogue between knowledge and the unknown, form and feeling, the artificial and the human. It suggests a shared familial memory between humanity and artificial intelligence that reaches through all of human knowledge, through all recorded time. It speaks to an increasing blur between our species, with 2D illustrations and fluid, photographic qualities shifting into something new, still unformed, but familiar, and somehow, undeniably hopeful. It is this moment’s page in a genealogy that charts the evolution of AI itself.
